Designing Interactions Prof. Philipp Heidkamp Prof. Andreas Muxel Mobilities. Connectedness. Interactions. How do pervasive digital devices influence the way people use (public) spaces? More than a decade after the upcoming of the term ubiquitious computing, the internet of things, smart cities and hybrid spaces are promoted. The internet is a global communication system connecting not only people via products like mobile devices, but also connecting things to each other or to us. With an increased mobility, we changed the way of interactions. In public space, the mobile device is not only an interface, it is an action space, the connection or touchpoint to services and systems to be designed. Public space is a fluid product of interrelations, constituted through interactions and constantly under construction.

Prof. Dr. Erlhoff gives a challenging but very interesting lecture about the object, from the etymology of the concept to the various dimensions of it and the philosophical struggle between the object and the subject, to the creation and use of and interaction with objects.

First part of the christmas special lecture on 13th December by Prof. Dr. Michael Erlhoff, Prof. Dr. Uta Brandes and students of My desk is my castle team. The project researched the usage of desks in world wide and analysed them from different perspectives. The researched result is published now as a book.

As second part of the christmas lecture, Prof. Paolo Tumminelli gave a lecture of car design in europe, according to his publishment of a book “Car design in Europe”. Interesting insight of the connection between car design and culture, atmosphere of that decade.

Prof. Tumminelli’s lecture on 30th December 2011, about 80′s culture (and 70′s) and atmosphere. It is interesting to see how today’s life is influenced by 80′s and how did it change since then. The lecture show the 80′s culture from the point of view of entreatments, cinemas, advertisements, musics and off course cars!

Friday presentation on 11th November 2011,  soul of the things and two short term projects by gast professors.

This time the »Soul of the Objects« project was done by prof. »Dr. Michael Erlhoff.« The project tried to give soul (anima) to objects.

»Time Experience« project was led by »Prof. Makoto Hosoya« of Nihon Unv. in Japan. The project was one week project and made concepts for public design through time experience.

»Design for Special Needs« project was led by Prof. Avram Grant from Israel. The team tackled the difficulty and possibility of the disabled people and challenged, how to concur the difficulty through universal design.

Two presentation from Die Seele der Dinge (The soul of the thing) project. One is Die Seele der Dinge in Budapest by Prof. Gais and Prof. Utikal, which was done in Budapest, Hungary. This project aimed to seek “soul of the city” in different country and different environment in typographical way.

Second presentation of Die Seele der Dinge project was also aimed to seek the soul of the city in Cologne. It was led by Prof. Großhans and intensively explored Cologne.

Third presentation was from Evaluation AG (Arbeit Gemeinschaft) which led by Prof. Brandes. The team presented the last year’s evaluation result of the students in KISD with installations.

Professor Alvin Yip from Hong Kong PolyU and leader from the RICE Lab gives interesting insights into some of his projects. He talks about being a cultural developer in Hong Kong, a city of regularities, monopolies and lockers. And at the same time curiosities, synergies and platforms. He uses these apparent contradictions to implement astonishing projects and finds spaces to get in touch with people. Starting with ten speculations from a point of China, where your right brain is wanted!

Binglu Gu and Barbara Weber talk about their experiences from their exchange semesters at several european partner universitys.

Michael Jurisch and David Grieshammer are talking about their glance through China and their experiences at the partner university “The Hong Kong Polytechnic University” in Hong Kong.

Prof. Dr. Erlhoff reflektiert über Design und Kunst in Asien mit Verweis auf eine Bauhausaustellung in China. Abschließend gibt er einen Anstoß, sich der Herkunft von Wörtern wieder mehr bewusst zu werden.

Herr Professor Horntrich leitet die Vorlesungsreihe zum Thema “Die Seele der Dinge” mit seinem Vortrag ein. Kritisch wird die Fragestellung nach der Existenz und dem Verständnis von “Seele” beleuchtet. Was hat die Seele mit unseren Emotionen und unserem Gemüt zu tun? Und wie kommt sie überhaupt in die Dinge?

This year, dutch grafic designer Erik Kessels received Kölner Klopfer.

Kölner Klopfer is unique design award which organized by students. The awarding selemony and  party was took place in KISD on June 30.

Michael Walker und Andrew Wilson, Master Studenten European Design, geben einen Einblick in das, im Wintersemester 2010/11 an der KISD statt gefundene, Wissenschaftliche Seminar “Animal Design”. Michael Walker bezieht sich hierbei auf “Redesigned/Augmented Animals” und Andrew Wilson gibt eine Einblick in die sogenannten “Robot Animals”.
