Designing Commons | Gemeinsames — Gestalten

It’s that time (again). Our beloved democracy is once again under threat from right-wing nutters and general disenchantment with democracy. But alongside the necessary demonstrations and Instagram solidarity, can we also do things that promote and demand a culture of democracy? Maybe even as designers!
In the first part of the seminar, we will look at the basic questions of participatory design. Why “designing together” at all? For better results, for more acceptance? Or as a pedagogical tool?
We look at and discuss the motives, ideas and players who claim to be co-creative in some way. From wicked problems and democracy education to Scandinavian participatory design, design thinking, service design and whatever else seems important to us …
In the second part, we will identify and test strategies, principles, methods and tools from the various fields of application and evaluate their process- and result-oriented advantages and disadvantages. What are the potentials and hopes, what are the risks and pitfalls?
In this seminar, students gain an insight into the genesis and status quo of participatory design approaches. In particular, they gain valuable experience with participatory design tools and can make use of them in the context of their studies and/or professional work as designers.

Es ist (mal) wieder soweit. Unsere geliebte Demokratie wird von rechten Spinnern und allgemeinem Demkratieverdruss gefährdet. Aber können wir, neben notwendigen Demonstrationen und Instagram-Solidarität, auch Dinge tun, die Demokratiekultur fördern und fordern? Vielleicht ja sogar als Gestalter:innen!? Im ersten Teil des Seminars beschäftigen wir uns mit Grundfragen Partizipativer Gestaltung. Warum überhaupt "Gemeinsames Gestalten"? Für bessere Ergebnisse?Für mehr Akzeptanz? Oder doch als pädagogisches Instrument? Wir betrachten und diskutieren die Motive, Ideen und Akteure, die für sich beanspruchen in irgendeiner Form zu kokreativ zu wirken. Von bösartigen Problemen und Demokratiepädagogik bis hin zu Scandinavian Participatory Design, Design Thinking, Service Design und was uns sonst noch wichtig erscheint … Im zweiten Teil identifizieren und erproben wir Strategien, Prinzipien, Methoden und Tools aus den verschiedenen Anwendungsgebieten und evaluieren deren prozess- aber auch ergebnisorientierten Vor- und Nachteile. Was sind die Potentiale und Hoffnungen, welche Risiken und Fallstricke gibt es? Studierende erlangen in diesem Seminar einen Einblick in die Genese und den Status Quo partizipativer Gestaltungsansätze. Insbesondere machen sie wertvolle Erfahrungen mit partizipativen Design-Werkzeugen und können diese im Rahmen ihres Studiums und/oder professionellen Arbeit als Gestalter:innen nutzbar machen.
