Methods Lab II | Practices, Concepts and Media in Design

Design processes defy a traditional understanding of methods: they alternate between rule-guided procedures and their constant transgression. They contain fuzziness – yet they are subject to the constraints of precision and explicitness. Design oscillates between analysis and synthesis and is oriented towards something that initially only exists as a possibility. This is why the work of designers does not only begin where precisely outlined problems are transformed into standardized solutions, but already with the construction of these problems. The methods used are ways of questioning one’s own conceptual thinking and design acting, rather than following rigid process models.

With this in mind, three different lab projects of three weeks each will enable a fundamental analysis of the meaning and function of methodological approaches, while examining and developing concrete methodological practices for design and research in lab-like situations.

Gestalterische Prozesse fordern ein tradiertes Methodenverständnis heraus: Sie changieren zwischen regelgeleitetem Vorgehen und dessen beständigen Überschreiten. Sie enthalten Unschärfen und unterliegen doch dem Zwang zu Präzision und Explizierung. Gestaltung oszilliert zwischen Analyse und Synthese und ist auf etwas ausgerichtet, das zunächst nur als Möglichkeit existiert. Deshalb setzt die Tätigkeit von Designer*innen nicht erst in einer Phase ein, in der exakt umrissene Probleme standardisierten Lösungen zugeführt werden, sondern beginnt bereits mit der Problemkonstruktion. Die verwendeten Methoden sind dann keine starren Prozessmodelle. Vielmehr beschreiben sie Wege, mit denen das eigene gestalterische Denken und Handeln in Frage zu stellen.

Mit Blick hierauf ermöglichen drei Labs von jeweils drei Wochen einerseits die grundlegende Auseinandersetzung mit der Bedeutung und Funktion methodischer Ansätze. Andererseits werden konkrete methodische Praktiken für die Entwurfspraxis & Forschung in laborartigen Situationen untersucht und entwickelt.
