Applied Prompting: Image Concepts

In synthetic media, the image ultimately loses its singularity and becomes a pluralistic term. Whether in a physical or digital form, synthetic images cannot be perceived as separate artifacts anymore. Instead, they need to be considered “as networked interfaces between human and non-human actors (including platforms, databases, and corporations) within socio-technical systems,” as Lukas R. Wilde has noted. Generative imagery is a medium that lacks specificity and is one of quantity and speed. The image generation process is characterized by the possibility of choosing between different outcomes, and the ability to instantly repeat the process as many times as one wishes to.

In synthetic media, we seem to have reached the final stage of the mechanization and democratization of media production, as theorized by Walter Benjamin, while introducing a new dimension to reproduction. Rather than simply reproducing existing works, this medium allows for the creation of new works by applying visual effects, appearances, vibes, and aesthetics to existing and newly generated subjects, objects, or entire scenes.

In this short project, we will explore and conceptualize narratives and produce series of images based on curiosity. We will be both art directors and image makers, using generative AI to explore areas such as documentary, fashion, still life, and fiction. In the second phase, we will take on the role of editors, developing themes, assembling cohesive editorials, creating contexts, and finally documenting our work through a collaborative publication and/or installation.

Der Prozess der Bildgenerierung zeichnet sich durch die Möglichkeit aus, zwischen verschiedenen Ergebnissen zu wählen und den Prozess beliebig oft und unmittelbar zu wiederholen.

Synthetische Bilder, so scheint es, leiten das letzte Stadium der Automatisierung der Medienproduktion ein, wie sie Walter Benjamin theoretisierte, und eröffnen gleichzeitig eine neue Dimension der Reproduktion. Anstatt bestehende Werke einfach zu vervielfältigen, ermöglicht dieses Medium die Schaffung neuer Werke, indem visuelle Effekte, Erscheinungsbilder, Vibes und Ästhetiken auf bestehende und neu geschaffene Subjekte, Objekte oder ganze Szenerien angewendet werden.

In diesem kurzfristigen Projekt erforschen und entwerfen wir auf Neugier basierende Narrative und produzieren Bildserien. Wir werden sowohl Art Direktoren als auch Bildproduzenten sein und generative KI nutzen, um Bereiche wie das Dokumentarische, Modefotografie, Stillleben und Fiktion zu erforschen. In der zweiten Phase werden wir die Rolle von Editoren übernehmen und unsere Arbeit kontextualisieren, Themen und kohärente Editorials entwickeln und schließlich unsere Arbeit in einer gemeinsamen Publikation und/oder Installation dokumentieren.
