… wooden toys again? Haven’t we done that before?

Yes, we have. But there are a few good reasons why I’m doing it again. Firstly, I receive many requests asking me to do the project again (… ab-so-f*cking-lu-tely!). Secondly, every time I’ve done it, I’ve learned something new about how to make the project even better – to the benefit of the students. Thirdly: Product Design! Workshop! Building models! Hands-on activities!

That’s why: wooden toys.

This project is about (functional) wooden ‘toys’. In this case, ‘functional’ means that all objects should have additional functions, so you can always stick, fold, turn, bend, roll or change something.

The goals are a clear design language, recognisable functions – and an appealing aesthetic. You will try out a conceptual design approach, do a lot of experimenting and build many preliminary models (and prototypes …). A welcome side effect for you: lots of beautiful Christmas presents ….! The project is also suitable for beginners, provided that your hands are not just thumbs. An interest in wood as a material and a strong sense of playfulness are advantageous … and you should be really engaged and diligent!

…. schon wieder Holzspielzeug? Hatten wir das nicht schonmal?

Ja, hatten wir. Aber es gibt ein paar gute Gründe, warum ich es nochmal anbiete. Erstens: ich bekomme viele Anfragens, dass ich das Projekt doch (… uuunbedingt)! noch einmal machen solle. Zweitens: jedes Mal habe ich etwas Neues dazugelernt, wie man so eine Projekt *noch* besser machen könnte – zum Vorteil der Studierenden. Drittens: Produktgestaltung! Werkstatt! Modelle bauen! Sachen zum Anfassen!

Darum: Holzspielzeug.

In diesem Projekt geht es um (funktionale) »Spielsachen« aus Holz. Mit »funktional« ist in diesem Fall gemeint, dass alle Objekte zusätzliche Funktion(en) haben sollen, man kann also immer etwas stecken, klappen, drehen, biegen, rollen oder verändern.

Ziele sind eine klare Formensprache, ablesbare Funktionen – und eine ansprechende Ästhetik. Sie erproben einen konzeptionellen Gestaltungsansatz, werden viel Experimentieren und viele Vormodelle (und Modelle …) bauen. Ein willkommener Nebeneffekt für Sie: viele schöne Weihnachtsgeschenke …! Das Projekt ist auch für Anfänger*innen geeignet, solange hre Hände nicht nur aus Daumen bestehen. Interesse an Holz als Material und ein ausgeprägter Spieltrieb sind von Vorteil … und Sie sollten wirklich sehr fleißig sein!
