This will be our 11th edition of the Winter School hosted by GSA and kicked off 2015 together with KISD (and many more partners since then).
Winter School is designed in two stages: First, there is the Global Hybrid Winter School where student teams from all participating schools are working together both in their cities, but also remotely on a shared briefing.
Winter School 2026 will focus again on the human relation with the environment, based on the campus hyper local context and aiming to find ways to scale and translate the reflections and outcomes to other contexts. There is an ongoing global conversation on the human relation with the environment, the role human beings should take in this relation, and the need to open any action to other entities and agencies. An openness that should embrace other temporalities, other cycles, other measurements but those related to human socio-technical structures. This global conversation is being strongly developed in Scotland, and mostly in non-urban contexts, of which Altyre Estate, the site in which GSA Highlands&Islands Campus is settled, is a clear case study. As part of this open conversation, Winter School 2026 aims to question, reflect and suggest access point for change on topics that are key to develop this transformation.
Winter School aims to be an opportunity to give voice and serve the Landscape, to explore the potential environment Stewardship, to rethink and reframe rights and responsibilities related to the human interaction with the environment, and to find out Accountabilities to plan, iterate and move forward. This positioning aims to merge the hyper local, with its material, embodied and heritage dimension, with the Hyper connected essence of our daily life, mediated by digital technologies and social networks. Therefore, we encourage to explore a multilayered and complex understanding of how humans interact with the world and the constant intertwining of environment, culture, technology, and even economy and politics, in any human action.
Our first online week in January aims to open a conversation with Altyre Estate as a concrete place in the planet. Students, teaching staff and guests, who will be participating from a huge diversity of locations, will increasingly connect their own environments and background to this precise site in the Highlands. This conversation will promote students to react in relation to their own context and find out the proper terminology, methodology and questions to be developed.
From January to April, we will promote an evolving conversation to be captured in a digital platform, that should lead to a set of words and terms, coming out from the January week outcomes, which should frame the approach to the April on site workshop.
Come and join this unique experience and opportunity – as the particiapation in this week is a preqrequisite to join the on-site week in the Highland Campus of GSA taking place April 11-18, 2026. Places in April are limited to max. 8 students from KISD. More details about the topic will be published in autumn in our KISD space!

Dies ist die 11. Winter School, die von der GSA veranstaltet und 2015 gemeinsam mit der KISD (und seitdem vielen weiteren Partnern) ins Leben gerufen wurde.
Die Winter School ist in zwei Phasen unterteilt: Zunächst gibt es die Global Hybrid Winter School im Januar, bei der Studententeams aus allen teilnehmenden Schulen sowohl in ihren Städten als auch remote an einem gemeinsamen Briefing arbeiten.
Die Winter School 2026 wird sich erneut auf die Beziehung des Menschen zur Umwelt konzentrieren, basierend auf dem hyperlokalen Kontext des Campus und mit dem Ziel, Wege zu finden, um die Überlegungen und Ergebnisse auf andere Kontexte zu übertragen und zu skalieren. Es gibt eine anhaltende globale Debatte über die Beziehung des Menschen zur Umwelt, die Rolle, die der Mensch in dieser Beziehung einnehmen sollte, und die Notwendigkeit, alle Maßnahmen für andere Einrichtungen und Behörden zu öffnen. Eine Offenheit, die andere Dimensionen von Zeit, andere Kreisläufe und andere Messgrößen als diejenigen, die mit menschlichen soziotechnischen Strukturen zusammenhängen, einbeziehen sollte. Diese globale Debatte wird in Schottland intensiv geführt, vor allem in nicht-urbanen Kontexten, wofür Altyre Estate, der Standort des GSA Highlands&Islands Campus, ein ausgezeichntes Beipsiel ist. Als Teil dieses offenen Dialogs möchte die Winter School 2026 Fragen formulieren, reflektieren und Ansatzpunkte für Veränderungen zu Themen vorschlagen, die für die Entwicklung dieser Transformation von zentraler Bedeutung sind.
Die Winter School soll eine Gelegenheit sein, der Landschaft “eine Stimme zu geben” und unsere Rolle im Zusammenhang mit der menschlichen Interaktion mit der Umwelt zu überdenken und neu zu definieren. Wir ermutigen dazu, ein vielschichtiges und komplexes Verständnis zu entwickeln, wie wir Menschen mit der (Um)Welt interagieren und wie Umwelt, Kultur, Technologie und sogar Wirtschaft und Politik in jedem menschlichen Handeln ständig miteinander verflochten sind.
Unsere erste Online-Woche im Januar zielt darauf ab, einen Dialog mit Altyre Estate als konkretem Ort auf dem Planeten zu eröffnen. Studierende, Lehrende und Gäste, die aus einer Vielzahl von Orten (Deutschland, Schottland, Spanien, Slovakei, Kyrgistan und China) teilnehmen werden, werden versuchen, Beziehungen ihrer eigenen Umgebung mit diesem spezifischen Ort in den Highlands zu etablieren. Dieser Dialog wird die Studierenden dazu anregen, auf ihren eigenen Kontext zu reagieren und die geeigneten Begriffe, Methoden und Fragen zu finden, die entwickelt werden sollen.
Die Teilnahme an dieser Woche ist Voraussetzung für die Teilnahme an der Präsenzwoche auf dem Highland Campus der GSA, die vom 11. bis 18. April 2026 stattfindet. Die Plätze im April sind auf maximal 8 Studierende der KISD begrenzt. Weitere Details zum Thema werden im Herbst in unserem KISDspace veröffentlicht!
Achtung: Es kann vorkommen, dass die Januar-Woche eine Woche früher stattfindet!
