A Critical Approach to Working with Intelligent Systems
Artificial intelligence is everywhere – yet it usually remains either a ‘black box’ or a showcase for tools. In this short-term project, we aim to explore something in between: treating AI not as a finished system, but as something that shifts, evolves and can be tested within the creative process.
What makes today’s AI so special? What does AI actually produce? What about the quality of the things it creates? And how do we deal with it now? What are the opportunities?
The aim of the course is not to learn how to use specific tools, but to develop an understanding of how these systems work, what they produce, and how they can be used critically and creatively. We’ll take a close look at what AI actually means for us as designers, as a society and in the reality of our working lives. Let’s develop: a design mindset!
The project is led by Charlie Singer-Fischer. *Charlie Singer-Fischer is a graduate designer (2024) specialising in critical design practice, which engages with the social and technological developments of our time.

Kritische Praxis im Umgang mit intelligenten Systemen
Künstliche Intelligenz ist überall – meistens bleibt sie dabei entweder Black Box oder Tool-Showcase. In diesem Short Term Project versuchen wir etwas dazwischen: KI nicht als fertiges System zu behandeln, sondern als etwas, das sich im gestalterischen Prozess verschiebt, kippt und testen lässt.
Was macht die heutige KI so besonders? Was erzeugt KI eigentlich? Wie steht es um die Qualität der gestalteten Dinge? Und wie gehen wir jetzt damit um? Was sind die Chancen?
Ziel des Kurses ist nicht, den Umgang mit bestimmten Tools zu erlernen, sondern ein Verständnis dafür zu entwickeln, wie diese Systeme funktionieren, was sie erzeugen und wie man sie kritisch und kreativ einsetzen kann. Wir schauen uns gezielt an, welche Bedeutung KI für uns als Gestaltende, als Gesellschaft und als Arbeitsrealität eigentlich hat. Let’s develop: gestalterische Haltung!
Projekt wird geleitet von Charlie Singer-Fischer. *Charlie Singer-Fischer ist Diplom-Designerin (2024) mit Fokus auf kritischer Designpraxis, die sich mit den gesellschaftlichen und technologischen Entwicklungen unserer Zeit auseinandersetzt.
