Needed Materials for the Biennale Exhibition

Hi Estelle and All,

Here under are the answers for your questions:

(1) Maximum 5 independent pictures/photos for each project team. Each selected picture/photo should be visually impactful and its file size should be sufficient for A4 print out. (DEADLINE: before next Wednesday, 3 March)

(2) Each project will require ONE QR code. The QR code should connect viewers to a self-running presentation – a concise version of KISD presentation. (DEADLINE: also by next Wednesday, 3 March)

(3) Based on the self-running presentation, each team need to prepare a short VIDEO seperately. Then, we need a volunteer to help to put all short videos together into ONE final video which include the following information:

—[a] the NAME of the collaboration;

—[b] Names and Logos of KISD and PolyU Design;

—[c] a short introduction + time frame of this joint intiative.

—[d] Names of design, corresponding team members and the project tutors (Philipp, Benny and Stefan).

(DEADLINE: by March 14)

(4) Each group propse one ‘representational’ scent/ spice/flavour for your project (Ms. Manuela Catania will help to purchase and prepare that in Italy). (DEADLINE: by the end of tomorrow, 27 Feb)

Miro board and material

Benny and I had a meeting with Manuela from the Biennale today and we kindly ask you to put your diaries on the Miro board as mentioned below, add the one key contact to address for the Biennale – and additionally share max. 5 photos with us where Benny and I could select 1 or 2. Those images will then be exhibited on the walls, with a QR code next to it linking to a self-running presentation (basically your KISD presentation, but shortened). In addition, we would need a volunteer to put the short sequences together, add information (KISD, PolyU, Participants, Time Frame etc) so that it is self-explanatory. It will be shown at the Biennale as well. More info on the miro…

Your support needed to share material to finalize project and prepare exhibition

We also opened a frame there for some more visual material we ask you to share with us so that we could prepare a short movie of the story of our project (your commensality exercises, visual impressions of your research eg in shops etc.). as mentioned yesterday for the introduction of our presentation we need 1 image and 1 sentence that describes the outcome of each group on the miro frame called “FRIDAY PRESENTATION INTRODUCTION”.

Next steps and meetings

Thanks again for the excellent work and presentations you made last Tuesday, I was very impressed what you achieved in the last week!

Tomorrow at 1300 (Cologne) / 2000 (HK) we will meet for max 2 hrs to clarify some final questions for the KISD internal presentation that will take place this Thursday at 1400 (Cologne). As you know, this presentation will be around 20 mins, Benny and I will briefly introduce the project context and setting and then the groups will share their outcomes. Of course we can invite the audience to go deeper into single presentations (eg on a dedicated miro board). We could also think of giving a 5 mins overview and then inviting the audience (around 100 students) to join one of the breakoutrooms (we could install 7 of them) where the groups could present longer…so this is left up to you guys, but let´s discuss your suggestion including a pre-final draft of your presentation tomorrow.

As Benny shared the “Project Diary” structure and comments with you, this would be your documentation and course report at KISD.

Benny and I would then – around next week – have a look at your submitted work, your visuals and see how this could fit into the setting of the March Biennale in Italy. We will get back to you by the end of February and have a quick meeting ob March 2 with a few of you to clarify opportunities and work to do for the Biennale contribution.

The joint project will center around the challenges and opportunities of the issues of ‘changing habits during the Covid pandemic’ and ‘food value (ecological, economical, social/societal…) which we all are confronting and anticipating at the moment, and still likely to encounter in a foreseeable future.

In this international joint project, students from various cultural backgrounds (gathered from both KISD and PolyU Design HongKong) would require to team up (3-4 persons per group) and respond to the following questions with a critical, provocative design:

How relevant are local cultural heritages to the challenges of food production, waste, and safety?
How could a food preparing, cooking, or dining experience at home become enjoyable yet meaningful at the midst of (and after) the COVID-19 pandemic?
How would such experiences be conducted and promoted eco-friendly, effectively, efficiently, and economically among family members, friends
and personal social networks?
How does digitalization influence the way we prepare, enjoy, and share food/meals, and which new opportunities, practices, and habits emerge?

We will meet every Tuesday at 1200 UTC (1300 Cologne or 2000 HK) – and occasionally on some Thursdays.

In term of foods, I’m really picky !

Hello All!

I think I should introduce myself briefly here as well. My name is Benny Ding LEONG, in Chinese 梁町. Together with Philipp and Stefan, I’m going to accompanying you through this unpredictable yet exciting journey of “exploring urban food cultures for circularity” !

As about me, I was born in Macau and grew up in Hong Kong (HK) since I’ve brought to HK by my parents just 2 years of age. So, I am a native Chinese.

But in term of foods, I have to tell you that I am a very picky guy. I think there are only a few restaurants which can satisfy my tummy (even the one with michelin stars). If you had watched a movie named “Ratatouille” (五星級大鼠), I think I’m much alike the food critic Anton Ego. My tummy (or stomach) is my boss if it come to foods. That’s why my wife had really a tough time at the beginning of our marriage, ha ha 🙂 But now, I can claim, she is one of the most amazing chefs of Canton cuisine(粵菜) and Chaozhou cuisine (潮州菜) cursines in the world! Really! Dishes cooked by her with so much dedication, affection and love! Everyday become wonderful when I think of the delicious foods prepared for her. If you have the opportunity to come to Hong Kong, you will be welcome to meet my wife. Well, whether you would have the luck to try her cooking. It all depends lol………… Ha Ha !!

Hi, everyone~ I’m Janice from Guangzhou, China, and taking the part-time Master Degree Programme of Design Strategic at PolyU now.

I majored in industrial design in my undergraduate study and used to be a furniture researcher and designer. Now I’m running a design consultant company called inDare with my partners. If you ask me what is my favorite food, I would say my father’s dishes without thinking. He is not a chef or ever learned cooking. But he is a genius for Cantonese cuisine and his specialty is Fried Crab with Ginger and Shallot. Oh, so missing home… Cause now I’m staying in Hong Kong… After the pandemic, welcome my teammates to my home to try my dad’s cooking XD

Talking about food homing for circularity, the policy of mandatory waste separation was put into effect last year in some big cities in China, including kitchen waste. Yes, it comes or you will be fined for the wrong separation, hahaha~ My mum is so confused about the separation and always says to herself that never too old to learn. At the beginning of the policy, an auntie would stand behind the garbage sorting bin to check your waste. Interesting indeed~ Daily quiz~

Hi! I am Lynn from PolyU HK!

Hi, I’m Lynn from PolyU HK. I’m currently studying Design Practices in postgraduate, and have a background in visual communication design as an undergraduate. Hope it will be helpful in future projects. In my ordinary life, I usually like to make traditional Chinese stir-fry, also called home cooking. But in fact, I am still very interested in baking, because I personally like sweets haha. So glad to have such an opportunity to learn with others from KISD. I am looking forward to meeting you guys on the course!

Hello!

I am Swasti, studying my final year of product design at Hong Kong PolyU. I am born and raised in India and have moved a considerable bit around South east Asia. I recently completed a year long exchange at Konstfack University, Sweden.

Coming from a big Indian family, food was always the focal and connecting point for so many gatherings and social interactions with family and friends. When stuck in our tiny studio apartments during the pandemic in Sweden, food again became the crucial thing that brought me closer to my other exchange friends. It was through our dinners and lunches where we cooked and ate together that we all got through and also learnt so much more about our different cultures. Here is a picture from one of our makeshift dinner settings 🙂

I am quite fascinated by how food is the glue for so many of our human interactions and would be interested to explore what will our future meals look like and the way we grow and cook in the years to come; especially with rising urbanisation, smaller homes and more and more people living alone 🙁

My areas of interest include sustainability and disruptive technologies. In the past, I have worked on topics of e waste in electronic home appliances, you can read more about my project here https://swasti-sethi.com/Marti .I am currently also researching about my final project on AI and Humans, the future of our relations with each other and maybe nature (?) Hopefully I can also apply some learnings from that into this collaborative project.
