Autocity Cologne II | Autostadt Köln II

Love it or hate it, in Cologne (and its surroundings) the automobile has a special tradition. Nicolaus Otto invented the internal combustion engine in Deutz in 1867. A century later, artist Wolf Vostell placed his concrete sculpture “Resting Traffic“ on the city’s ring road. Quasi the beginning and end of a myth, both in one city. But the legacy hasn’t yet reached its end: Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher was born here, here Ford has been designing and making cars for more than 90 years. In this multimedia storytelling project, we research, visit, document, and finally tell the untold design story of the „Autostadt Cologne“.

After research as part of the medium-term project in the last winter semester confirmed the enormous, fascinating breadth and depth of the content, the announced long-term project builds on its results and, among other things, looks for possibilities for concrete, far-reaching implementation in cooperation with stakeholders in the city of Cologne.

Ob man es liebt oder hasst, in Köln (und Umgebung) hat das Automobil eine besondere Tradition. Nicolaus Otto erfand 1867 in Deutz den Verbrennungsmotor. Ein Jahrhundert später platzierte der Künstler Wolf Vostell seine Betonskulptur „Ruhender Verkehr“ auf dem Stadtring. Quasi Anfang und Ende eines Mythos, beides in einer Stadt. Doch das Erbe ist noch nicht zu Ende: Formel-Eins-Legende Michael Schumacher wurde hier geboren, hier entwirft und fertigt Ford Seit mehr als 90 Jahren Autos. In diesem multimedialen Storytelling-Projekt recherchieren, besichtigen, dokumentieren und schließlich erzählen wir die unerzählte Design-Geschichte der „Autostadt Köln“.

Nachdem die Recherche im Rahmen des mittelfristigen Projekts im letzten Wintersemester die enorme, faszinierende Breite und Tiefe der Inhalte bestätigt hat, baut das angekündigte langfristige Projekt auf dessen Ergebnisse und sucht unter anderem in Kooperation mit Stakeholdern der Stadt Köln nach Möglichkeiten einer konkreten, weitreichenden Umsetzung.
