camp:metabolon 2026

camp:metabolon is a true reality check on the current state of recycling processes in Germany and how we, as a society, deal with the things we leave behind. The project aims to make a positive change by tackling the complex topic of sustainability through a diverse range of design possibilities within products, processes, and systems.

The camp is set up interdisciplinarily and will be joined by Prof. Dr. Miriam Sartor and a group of engineers.

The project begins with an intensive week on-site, featuring tours through different recycling processes: a waste-to-energy plant, grate ash processing, biogas plant, composting, and landfill water treatment. We will “container” a lot of items to seek inspiration and will constantly be surrounded by the 10 million cubic meters of trash (!!!) piled up by humans over the last 20 years – the Leppe landfill.

Important: Please make sure you can participate in the field trip week to :metabolon from May 18–22, 2026. There will be three overnight stays from Tuesday to Friday at the CVJM-Haus Köttingen, a large guesthouse that the group will have all to themselves, including a large kitchen for self-catering. The costs for accommodation and food will be covered by TH-Köln. The week will be credited as a short-term (not selectable in the course selection). A midterm project will continue the process and will start on 2nd June.

camp:metabolon takes place for the 4th time. The first camp was initiated by an SIP led by Theresa Tropschuh, a great initiative that, due to its importance, must be continued.

camp:metabolon ist ein echter reality check des aktuellen Stands der Recyclingprozesse in Deutschland und wie wir als Gesellschaft mit den Dingen umgehen, die wir hinterlassen. Das Projekt hat das Ziel, etwas zum positiven zu Verändern, indem es dem komplexe Thema Nachhaltigkeit mit einem diversen Spektrum an designten Produkten, Prozessen und Systemen angeht.

Das Camp ist interdisziplinär aufgebaut und wird von Prof. Dr. Miriam Sartor und einer Gruppe von Ingenieuren begleitet.

Das Projekt beginnt mit einer intensiven Woche vor Ort, die Führungen durch verschiedene Recyclingprozesse umfasst: eine Abfall-zu-Energie-Anlage, Rostaschenaufbereitung, eine Biogasanlage, Kompostierung und die Deponie-Abwasseraufbereitung. Wir werden selbst Dinge „containern“, um Inspirationen zu finden, und werden ständig von den 10 Millionen Kubikmetern Müll (!!!) umgeben sein, die in den letzten 20 Jahren von Menschen aufgeschichtet wurden – die Deponie Leppe.

Wichtig: Stellt bitte sicher, dass ihr an der Exkursionswoche nach :metabolon vom 18. bis 22. Mai 2026 teilnehmen könnt. Es wird drei Übernachtungen von Dienstag bis Freitag im CVJM-Haus Köttingen geben, einem großen Gästehaus, das die Gruppe ganz für sich alleine haben wird, einschließlich einer großen Küche zur Selbstverpflegung. Die Kosten für Unterkunft und Verpflegung werden von der TH-Köln übernommen. Die Woche wird als KP anerkannt (nicht wählbar in der Kursauswahl). Ein MP wird das Projekt fortsetzen und am 2. Juni beginnen.

camp:metabolon findet zum 4. Mal statt. Das erste Camp wurde von einem SIP unter der Leitung von Theresa Tropschuh initiiert – eine großartige Initiative, die aufgrund ihrer Bedeutung fortgeführt werden muss.
