Code & Context: Interaction Design

This project introduces the theory and practice of interaction design. In a series of theoretical inputs, discussions, and practical experiments, students approach interaction as a material to be designed. The focus here lies on the role of materiality and of the subjective ‘feel’ of interaction, a consideration of how agency is distributed between human and non-human actors in interactive systems, the role of situated practices and implicit knowledge, and the iterative development of interfaces in a cycle of making and evaluating. The practical work will move from minimal physical interactions towards designing interaction with complex machine learning and AI systems that are hosted locally in a low-resource environment, following a philosophy of computing within limits.

The course takes place in collaboration with Code & Context at their location in Schanzenstr. 22, Mülheim. Meeting times are May 26, 28, and 29, June 1, 2, and 5, 10:00-16:00.

Dieses Projekt ist eine Einführung in Theorie und Praxis des Interaktionsdesigns. In einer Reihe von theoretischen Inputs und praktischen Experimenten nähern wir uns Interaktion als zu gestaltendes Material. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf der Rolle der Materialität und des subjektiven „Gefühls“ der Interaktion, der Betrachtung wie sich „Agency“ zwischen menschlichen und nicht-menschlichen Akteuren in interaktiven Systemen verteilt, der Rolle situierter Praxis und impliziten Wissens sowie der iterativen Entwicklung von Schnittstellen. Die praktische Arbeit erstreckt sich von minimalen physischen Interaktionen hin zur Gestaltung von Interaktion mit komplexen maschinellen Lern- und KI-Systemen, die lokal in einer ressourcenarmen Umgebung gehostet werden, getreu der Philosophie eines “computing within limits”.

Der Kurs findet in Kollaboration mit Code & Context in der Schanzenstr. 22 in Mülheim statt. Termine sind der 26., 28. und 29. Mai sowie der 1., 2. und 5. Juni, jeweils von 10:00 bis 16:00 Uhr.
