The integration of Augmented Reality (AR) into a complex urban experience has become easier and more accessible. This is the potential of this technology for postcolonial memory work in public space. Debates about colonial guilt and reparations, as well as the struggle over colonial monuments, can be made tangible through AR in urban space. This interdisciplinary project explores how AR can be used to visualize postcolonial perspectives and (de)colonial traces in urban space. To this end, participants will conceive, design and develop AR experiences. At the end of the project, selected results can be incorporated into an AR app that enables a pluralistic and participatory collective culture of remembrance.
Guest lecturers are Dr. Fabiola Arellano Cruz from the Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum in Cologne and KISD graduate and former master student Byron Co. It is strongly recommended to choose this short-term project in conjunction with the academic seminar “(De)Coloniality in the City: Emerging Traces from Urban Spaces”.

Die Integration von Augmented Reality (AR) in eine komplexe Stadterfahrung ist einfacher und zugänglicher geworden. Darin liegt das Potenzial dieser Technologie für eine postkoloniale Erinnerungsarbeit im öffentlichen Raum. Von der Entschädigungsdebatte bis zum Streit um koloniale Denkmäler – diese Auseinandersetzungen können durch AR im Stadtraum erfahrbar gemacht werden. Das interdisziplinäre Projekt geht der Frage nach, wie postkoloniale Perspektiven und (de)koloniale Spuren im Stadtraum mittels AR visualisiert werden können. Hierzu konzipieren, entwerfen und entwickeln die Teilnehmer*innen AR-Erlebnisse. Im Anschluss an das Projekt können ausgewählte Ergebnisse in eine entwickelte AR-App einfließen, die eine pluralistische und partizipative kollektive Erinnerungskultur ermöglichen soll.
Gastdozent:innen sind Dr. Fabiola Arellano Cruz vom Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum in Köln und der KISD-Absolvent und ehemalige Masterstudierende Byron Co. Es wird nachdrücklich empfohlen, dieses Kurzzeitprojekt in Verbindung mit dem wissenschaftlichen Seminar „(De)Coloniality in the City: Emerging Traces from Urban Spaces“ zu belegen.
