Mobile phones, smartwatches, and smart glasses consistently gather data from us, in most cases even without us being aware. On the other hand, an increasing number of devices are infiltrating our public and private living spaces, measuring and saturating them with virtual data. This data is analyzed by artificial intelligence to generate new insights, classify, evaluate, and measure us, ultimately predicting our actions.
Why is this relevant? There is an increasing need for being aware of the data: Data awareness involves being conscious and informed about the types of data being gathered, the purposes for which it is being collected, who has access to it, and how it is being (or might be) used.
Within the Megatrend Digitalization in this midterm project »Design Data X Cultures« we will deal with the subject of data awareness from an intercultural perspective. In a joint project with the Texas State University (TXST) we will work together with students both with a design and an interdisciplinary background. Through a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach, the project will involve gathering Data and analyzing the Data Life Cycle for the development of innovative analog or digital design concepts, products or interventions for more data-awareness in Austin and Cologne (city as an interface).
We will address the following questions, among others:
Due to the different start and end of semester of the Texas State we will start the project with a joint experience at KISD: a kick-off with an initiation weekend workshop from 23th and 24th of March. We will meet in KISD room 11, get to know each other, discuss about intercultural communication, cultural awareness, city as an interface and data literacy, have a nice remote hybrid exchange with the students in Texas, cook together and create first ideas and concepts for the project.
