Design and Community: An Intercultural Project on Principles of Participatory Design | Design und Gemeinschaft: Interkulturelles Projekt zu Prinzipien partzipativer Gestaltung

The claim of participatory design, which aims at social innovation, could be consistently justified along the sociological concept of communicative rationality, although it hardly corresponds to its tenets empirically – at least not in the “Global North”. Our project follows the thesis that communities can be found in the Southern Hemisphere that stand significantly closer to this regulative idea. For its verification, we are cooperating with UNAM in Mexico City. Among other things, we are conducting case studies on principles of shaping the social sphere in local communities in southwestern Mexico and reflecting on their transferability to our own research questions and contexts. In order to observe such lifeworld-anchored practices from the perspective of design research, we will be working on-site for two weeks in January. This excursion is subsidized with 500 Euros each for 10 students. The allocation of funds is determined by the ranking in the regular selection procedure. The course is also open to additional participants.

Der Anspruch eines auf soziale Innovation zielenden partizipativen Designs ließe sich widerspruchsfrei entlang des soziologischen Begriffs der kommunikativen Vernunft begründen, deren Bestimmungen es empirisch aber kaum entspricht – wenigstens im „globalen Norden“ nicht. Unser Projekt folgt der These, dass sich in der südlichen Hemisphäre Gemeinschaften finden, die dieser regulativen Idee deutlich näher stehen. Zu ihrer Überprüfung arbeiten wir mit der UNAM in Mexiko-Stadt zusammen. Wir erstellen u. a. Fallstudien über Prinzipien der Gestaltung des Sozialen in lokalen Gemeinschaften im Südwesten Mexikos und reflektieren über ihre Übertragbarkeit auf unsere Fragestellungen und Kontexte. Um solche lebensweltlich verankerten Praktiken aus der Perspektive der Designforschung beobachten zu können, arbeiten wir im Januar zwei Wochen vor Ort. Diese Exkursion wird für 10 Studierende mit jeweils 500 Euro bezuschusst. Über die Mittelvergabe entscheidet der Listenplatz im regulären Wahlverfahren. Die Veranstaltung ist zudem für weitere Teilnehmerinnen offen.
