Service design approaches have been gaining attraction in the public sector in recent years and have started to be deployed to drive public value. Service design is increasingly being applied in government to address the complexity of public service delivery and policy. What can service design offer to policy making and government?
In this short-term project we will explore the intersection of public services, design and policy and test practical processes and tools to better understand policies, services and users and to generate creative solutions. Together we will look into what service design can do for policy makers. There are growing communities of practice and research investigating the value of design for policy. What is the purpose and role of design for policy? Can policy making be improved through service design and innovation approaches?
By applying service design approaches to a given policy challenge, we will explore new ways to frame, research and solve policy problems. In a week we will learn about policy design, apply different frameworks and experiment with design methods to tackle complex policy challenges. How are services related to policy and can design transform our approach to policy making to be more agile and human-centred?
The project will be conducted in English. We recommend the project in combination with the seminar “Hacking the Public Sector”.
