Global Hybrid Winter School 2026

This year´s winter school is a follow-up of the hybrid workshop in January with our partners in Mexico, Kirgistan, Spain, Slovakia, China and Scotland. A team of 80 students will be for one week at the Campus of the GSA Innovation School.

Winter School 2026 will focus on the human relationships with their specific environment, using the campus as hyper local context for exploration. Additionally, students are encouraged to find ways to scale and adapt these reflections and outcomes in other contexts and cultures.

There is an ongoing global conversation regarding the human relation with the environment, the role human beings should take in this relationship, and the need to align any action to other entities and agencies (some key references on this conversation could be A. Escobar, D. Haraway, M. Puigdelabellacasa, J. Briddle). An openness that should embrace other temporalities, other ecological cycles, other ways of measuring progress. This global conversation is being enthusiastically engaged in across Scotland, and mostly in non-urban contexts. The Altyre Estate, the site of GSA Highlands & Islands Campus, is a voice on this global conversation, which offers the unique opportunity for different case studies, collaboration with local stakeholders, and cutting-edge research threads. Winter School 2026 aims to question, reflect, and explore material and digital outcomes to suggest access points for change which could potentially promote an eco-social transformation towards more just, inclusive regenerative futures based on reformulations of human-nature relationships.

During the intensive project week in the Highlands & Islands Campus, students will experience multi-disciplinary and cross-cultural collaboration, develop “soft skills”, and use design as a form of enquiry focused upon future forms of interacting with our environment and ecology. The week involves an intense and direct connection with the place and its actors – human and more-than-human – in which participants use design to question and suggest potential transformations. Research conversations, which are a key part of this week, expose students to professional networks and friendship circles – creative, intellectual and personal.

Die diesjährige Winter School ist eine Fortsetzung des Hybrid-Workshops im Januar mit unseren Partnern in Mexiko, Kirgistan, Spanien, der Slowakei, China und Schottland. Ein Team von 80 Studierenden wird eine Woche lang auf dem Campus der GSA Innovation School vor Ort arbeiten.

Thema werden die Beziehungen des Menschen zu seiner spezifischen Umwelt bezogen auf den Campus als hyperlokalen Kontext. Darüber hinaus werden die Studierenden Wege suchen, diese Überlegungen und Ergebnisse in anderen Kontexten und Kulturen zu skalieren und anzupassen.

Der globale Diskurs über die Beziehung des Menschen zur Umwelt, die Rolle, die der Mensch in dieser Beziehung einnehmen sollte, und die Notwendigkeit, alle Maßnahmen an anderen Einheiten und Stellen auszurichten (wichtige Referenzen: A. Escobar, D. Haraway, M. Puigdelabellacasa, J. Briddle). Eine Offenheit, die andere Zeitlichkeiten, andere ökologische Zyklen und andere Möglichkeiten zur Messung des Fortschritts einbeziehen sollte. Diese globale Diskussion wird in Schottland und vor allem in nicht-urbanen Kontexten zunehmend geführt. Altyre Estate, der Standort des GSA Highlands & Islands Campus, ist ein wichtiger Akteur in dieser globalen Konversation und bietet eine einzigartige Gelegenheit für verschiedene Case Studies, die Zusammenarbeit mit lokalen Communities und Akteuren sowie zukunftsorientierten Forschungspersperspektiven bietet. Die Winter School 2026 zielt darauf ab, materielle und digitale Ergebnisse zu hinterfragen, zu reflektieren und zu untersuchen, um Zugangspunkte für Veränderungen vorzuschlagen, die möglicherweise eine ökosoziale Transformation hin zu gerechteren, integrativeren, regenerativen Zukunftsszenarien auf der Grundlage von Neuformulierungen der Mensch-Natur-Beziehungen fördern könnten.
