In this seminar, we will examine technologies used to ensure compliance and exploit both human and more-than-human lifeforms. We will explore and discuss concepts that may prove useful in understanding how technologies can become instruments of delivering violence. Furthermore, a relevant question will be how these tools and mechanisms “betray the reality that [their targets] press against, disrupt, and leak value from even the most apparently complete and relentless models of authoritarian subordination that we can devise.” (Wadiwel, 2018). By “staying with the trouble” and further investigating how the designed systems and built environments of the “Anthropocene” are not solely shaped by humans but co-created with the lifeforms they oppress, we will gain a deeper understanding of the processes and power structures of “interspecies worldmaking.”
This seminar will not take place on a weekly basis on Wednesdays, as it is usually the case. The first meeting will be online on May 8th. On May 12th/13th and on May 19th/20th we will meet all day long.
