In recent years, media and design research have provided important impulses for the critical engagement with digital cultures and their social implementation. While these impulses go in similar directions in some places, the discourses of media and design research and especially their practices – with few exceptions – have taken place independently of each other in recent years. In this seminar we will approach perspectives from the fields of media studies as well as design theory and research. Here we will explore new possibilities of how approaches from both disciplines can be intertwined. In doing so, we will look at interdisciplinary approaches that take critique from both theoretical and applied perspectives.
The basis of this interdisciplinary interweaving will be an engagement with existing scientific theoretical approaches to 1) critique of technology; 2) critique through technology; and 3) critique of technical practice. On this basis, we will attempt to provide an intersectional overview of different modes of critique in media and design studies and reflect on their entanglements together. These approaches range from Phil Agres’ “Critical Technical Practice” to the current approaches of Critical Design.
The aim of the seminar is to provide a common basis for the discussion of critical approaches and their differentiation from related but distinct concepts such as reflection and activism. This discussion will be supported by various thematic inputs by the lecturers. In order to create an interdisciplinary framework for critique, no prior knowledge of media studies or design theory and research is assumed for the seminar.
