Lab Culture Intro: Mycelium Leather

In this course we will focus on the cultivation and growing of pure mycelium as a vegan leather alternative. We will investigate the potential of mycelium, a sustainable fungal-based material consisting of the root mesh of a fungus. We will also explore different methods of substrate production and develop an understanding of sterile laboratory practices and incubation techniques.

Lab Culture Intro: Mycelium Leather and Lab Culture Intro: Mycelium Surface are two sequential and interrelated short project courses. Students who participate in this first Mycelium SP will automatically be enrolled in and participate in the second Mycelium SP.

The project will take place in room 220, the newly established Circular Material Lab, and in room 226, the project room for design and ecology. In the time between the two one-week SPs, which take place daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., meetings are being held on Wednesday afternoons to observe the growth process of our co-designer, the mycelium. After its growth phase, the material is harvested and further processed experimentally.

Please note that when you register for Lab Culture Intro: Mycelium Leather, you are also registering for Lab Culture Intro: Mycelium Surface. In the first SP you will learn methods for developing a vegan leather-like material. In the second SP you will learn how to treat the surface and experiment further with the material behavior.

In diesem Kurs werden wir uns auf die Kultivierung und den Anbau von reinem Myzel als vegane Lederalternative konzentrieren. Wir werden das Potenzial von Mycelium, einem nachhaltigen Material auf Pilzbasis, welches aus dem Wurzelgeflecht eines Pilzes besteht, untersuchen. Außerdem werden wir verschiedene Methoden zur Substratproduktion erforschen und ein Verständnis für sterile Laborpraktiken und Inkubationstechniken entwickeln.

Lab Culture Intro: Mycelium Leather und Lab Culture Intro: Mycelium Surface sind zwei aufeinander folgende und zusammenhängende Kurzprojektkurse. Studierende, die an diesem ersten Myzel-SP teilnehmen, werden automatisch auch für das zweite Myzel-SP eingeschrieben und nehmen daran teil.

Das Projekt findet in Raum 220, dem neu eingerichteten Circular Material Lab, sowie in Raum 226, dem Projektraum für Design und Ökologie, statt. In der Zeit zwischen den beiden einwöchigen SPs, welche jeweils täglich von 10 bis 17 Uhr stattfinden, finden Mittwochnachmittags Treffen statt, um den Wachstumsprozess unseres Co-Designers, des Myzels, zu beobachten. Nach seiner Wachstumsphase wird das Material geerntet und experimentell weiterverarbeitet.

Im ersten SP lernen Sie Methoden zur Entwicklung eines veganen lederähnlichen Materials kennen. Im zweiten SP lernen Sie, wie Sie die Oberfläche behandeln und mit dem Materialverhalten weiter experimentieren können.
