Lab Culture Intro: Mycelium Surface

In this course, the second part of two mycelium courses, the focus is on the experimental processing of grown mycelium, especially its surface. Lab Culture Intro: Mycelium Leather and Lab Culture Intro: Mycelium Surface are two consecutive short-term projects. Students who participate in the first SP will automatically be enrolled in and participate in this second SP.

We will explore different molding techniques and investigate the structural properties of the material. With the help of vegetable tannins, waxes and natural dyes, we will deal with the surface treatment of mycelium. Using various methods, we will investigate the material properties of mycelium and compare them with conventional leather. What unique properties does leather made from mycelium have that conventional leather does not? The aim is to create space for an experimental application of mycelium.

The project will take place in room 220, the newly established Circular Material Lab, as well as in room 226, the project room for Design and Ecology. In between the two separate week-long SPs, meetings are planned for Wednesday afternoons to review the growth progress of our co-designer Myzel.

Please note that by registering for Lab Culture Intro: Mycelium Leather, you are also registering for Lab Culture Intro: Mycelium Surface. In the first SP you will learn methods to develop a vegan leather-like material and in the second SP we will explore how to treat its surface and experiment with the material behavior of the mycelium.

In diesem Kurs, dem zweiten Teil von zwei Myzel-Kursen, liegt der Schwerpunkt auf der experimentellen Bearbeitung von gewachsenem Myzel, insbesondere der Oberfläche. Lab Culture Intro: Mycelium Leather und Lab Culture Intro: Mycelium Surface sind zwei aufeinanderfolgende Kurzzeitprojekte. Studierende, die am ersten SP teilnehmen, werden automatisch für dieses zweite SP eingeschrieben und nehmen automatisch daran teil.

Wir werden verschiedene Formgebungstechniken erforschen und die strukturellen Eigenschaften des Materials untersuchen. Mit Hilfe von pflanzlichen Gerbstoffen, Wachsen und natürlichen Farbstoffen werden wir uns mit der Oberflächenbehandlung von Myzel beschäftigen. Mit verschiedenen Methoden, untersuchen wir die Materialeigenschaften von Myzel und vergleichen sie mit herkömmlichem Leder. Welche einzigartigen Eigenschaften hat Leder aus Myzel, die herkömmliches Leder nicht hat? Ziel ist es, Raum für eine experimentelle Anwendung von Myzel zu schaffen.

Das Projekt wird sowohl in Raum 220, dem neu eingerichteten Circular Material Lab, als auch in Raum 226, dem Projektraum für Design und Ökologie, stattfinden. Zwischen den beiden getrennten einwöchigen SPs, sind Treffen für Mittwochnachmittags geplant, um den Wachstumsfortschritt unseres Co-Designers Myzel zu überprüfen.

Bitte beachten Sie, dass Sie mit der Anmeldung zu Lab Culture Intro: Mycelium Leather, sich zusätzlich für die Teilnahme an Lab Culture Intro: Mycelium Surface einschreiben. Im ersten SP werden Sie Methoden zur Entwicklung eines veganen lederähnlichen Materials erlernen und im zweiten SP werden wir untersuchen, wie die Oberfläche behandelt und mit dem Materialverhalten des Myzels experimentiert werden kann.
