Lab Culture Intro V: Plant Dyeing

In this short term project, we will explore the hidden colors of the human iris and  the experimental practice of natural dyeing. Each participant will begin with a close observation of their iris, focusing on its subtle hues, textures, and layers. The color range and density of the iris will serve as an important visual reference, and these impressions will form the starting point of the creative process.

Students will then investigate how the iris-inspired color ranges can be translated into natural dyeing experiments. The course covers fabric pre-treatment, mordanting, natural heat dyeing, and pattern dyeing techniques. Participants will compare how natural pigments react to different fibers and observe how variations in the dyeing process influence the resulting hues.

Through lectures, case studies, and hands-on experimentation, participants will build a color archive based on their iris and develop a creative project that connects personal identity with natural materiality.

The final outcomes will be presented in an exhibition/presentation, offering a space to reflect on the poetic, cultural, and ecological significance of natural color.

Due to the size of the lab space, 10 students only can take part in this course.

In diesem Kurzzeitprojekt werden wir die verborgenen Farben der menschlichen Iris und die experimentelle Praxis des natürlichen Färbens erkunden. Jeder Teilnehmer beginnt mit einer genauen Beobachtung seiner Iris, wobei er sich auf ihre subtilen Farbtöne, Texturen und Schichten konzentriert. Die Farbpalette und Dichte der Iris dienen als wichtige visuelle Referenz, und diese Eindrücke bilden den Ausgangspunkt für den kreativen Prozess.

Anschließend untersuchen die Teilnehmer, wie sich die von der Iris inspirierten Farbspektren in natürliche Färbeexperimente umsetzen lassen. Der Kurs behandelt die Vorbehandlung von Stoffen, das Beizen, das Färben mit natürlicher Hitze und Musterfärbetechniken. Die Teilnehmer vergleichen, wie natürliche Pigmente auf verschiedene Fasern reagieren, und beobachten, wie sich Variationen im Färbeprozess auf die resultierenden Farbtöne auswirken.

Durch Vorträge, Fallstudien und praktische Experimente erstellen die Teilnehmer ein auf ihrer Iris basierendes Farbarchiv und entwickeln ein kreatives Projekt, das persönliche Identität mit natürlicher Materialität verbindet.

Die Endergebnisse werden in einer Ausstellung/Präsentation vorgestellt, die Raum für Reflexionen über die poetische, kulturelle und ökologische Bedeutung natürlicher Farben bietet.

Aufgrund der Größe des Laborraums können nur 10 Teilnehmer an diesem Kurs teilnehmen.
