Mapping Cologne: Past and Presence of Processes and Politics

In his groundbreaking work “The Production of Space” (original: La production de l’espace, 1974), Henri Lefebvre formulates the fundamental understanding that space is not a neutral container, but is socially, culturally and economically constructed – and that it is both an expression and a condition of urban life. Looking at the city of Cologne from these perspectives reveals a variety of processes that we want to examine and understand using spatiotemporal mappings and infographics.

In seinem wegweisenden Werk „Die Produktion des Raums“ (Original: La production de l’espace, 1974) formuliert Henri Lefebvre das grundlegende Verständnis, dass Raum kein neutraler Container ist, sondern sozial, kulturell und ökonomisch konstruiert wird – Gleichermaßen Ausdruck aber auch Bedingung von städtischem Leben sei. Betrachtet man aus diesen Blickwinkeln die Stadt Köln offenbaren sich vielfältige Prozesse, die wir mittels raumzeitlicher Mappings bzw. Infografiken untersuchen und verstehen wollen.
