As designers we are usually only involved at the beginning of the product life cycle where we deal with form, function and production. Designers can try to understand the life cycle holistically but due to the lack of transparency of the recycling processes it is often not possible to think the product to the end of its life. At Camp :metabolon, we want to look under the carpet and observe where many intentionally look away. For this we spend four days on the landfill site in Lindlar, which is in the meanwhile the core facility of TH Köln for research on circular economy. We look at processes of fermentation, composting and thermal recycling processes, trudge through waste and want to understand the waste industry in a realistic way. It’s going to be dirty, smelly, and rough. Furthermore, we will get technical input from environmental engineering through impulse lectures and merge function, design and environment with the newly learned knowledge. In the second week we will take apart an existing product and redesign it so that it does not have to be landfilled or incinerated but can be introduced into existing (or even new) cycles. The project will be very time-consuming, so we recommend that you do not choose any other projects during this period. In addition, we will have the opportunity to present in the exhibition hall at :metabolon so that we can display our ideas, sketches and prototypes there. Please block the weekend after the event to build up the exhibition.
The participants should already have prototyping know-how, an insensitive nose and enjoy challenging design tasks.
