MXL: “Happy Palace Short” – Experimental 3D Animation Workshop

Meme culture meets grotesque poetics

During his studies at KISD, Nima Hülshorst conducted intensive research into meme culture and the aesthetics of the grotesque in order to specifically address the humor of Gen Z. This resulted in Broke Boy$ – a pilot for a potential series that is currently being screened at festivals and serves as the central visual reference for this workshop.

For the Lucid Dreams Festival near Vienna, AT, we are producing an experimental animated film at MXL as a co-participatory creative production. Quick ’n’ Dirty is not a compromise — it’s the aesthetic. As basis serves a script developed jointly by Nima Hülshorst and Prof. NJU, which will be implemented in teams during the workshop and then exhibited at the festival.

Technically, the project follows a hybrid pipeline: hand-built models and sets meet 3D animation. We build analog, digitize using photogrammetry, and stage everything in the Unity game engine. Animation is created using motion capture and supported by the Mixamo animation library.

The style ranges from grotesque meme aesthetics to a deliberately “ugly-ironic” approach. Post-digital imperfectionism becomes here an aesthetic approach to design.

Build. Scan. Animate. Go Ugly. Go Fast. 

Production is modular: each team develops an independent scene within the defined framework. A central score and a curated SFX library combine the contributions into a complete film. Teams of 2–3 people are expressly desired. The format is intensive and block-based. Therefore, exclusive commitment is required. Presence and focus are prerequisites—prior knowledge is helpful but not essential. The decisive factor is the willingness to quickly immerse oneself in processes.

Bonus level: The MXL has been invited to the Lucid Dreams Festival “Happy Palace” at the USTP. Five selected (regular BA) students will have the opportunity to travel with us (IC-supported / no international participants). Willingness and availability to travel to Austria from May 18 to 24 is mandatory.

Während seines Studiums an der KISD hat Nima Hülshorst intensiv zu Meme-Kultur und der Ästhetik des Grotesken geforscht, um den Humor der Gen Z gezielt zu adressieren. Daraus entstand Broke Boy$ – als Pilot für eine mögliche Serie, die sich momentan im Festival-Run befindet und als zentrale visuelle Referenz für diesen Workshop dient.

Für das Lucid Dreams Festival in Sankt Pölten, AT realisieren wir im MXL einen experimentellen Animationsfilm als co-partizipatorische Creative Production. Quick n Dirty ist die Devise. Grundlage ist ein gemeinsam entwickeltes Script von Nima Hülshorst und Prof. Juric, das im Workshop in Teams umgesetzt und anschließend auf dem Festival ausgestellt wird.

Ein zentraler Score und eine kuratierte SFX-Library verbinden die Beiträge zu einem Gesamtfilm. 2–3-Personen-Teams sind ausdrücklich erwünscht. Das Format ist intensiv und blockbasiert daher gilt: Präsenz-Pflicht mit exclusive commitment. Präsenz und Fokus sind Voraussetzung – Vorkenntnisse helfen, sind aber nicht zwingend. Entscheidend ist die Bereitschaft, schnell in Prozesse einzutauchen.

Bonuslevel: Das MXL wurde zum Lucid Dreams Festival „happy Palace“ der USTP eingeladen. Fünf (reguläre BA-)Studierende erhalten die Möglichkeit, mitzureisen (IC-unterstützt / keine internationalen Teilnehmer). Die Bereitschaft und Verfügbarkeit, vom 18. bis 24. Mai nach Österreich zu reisen, ist zwingend erforderlich.
