In recent years, a number of technologies have emerged under the umbrella term “Extended Reality (XR)”, which are described as “immersive”. In the case of virtual reality (VR), simulated realities can be experienced audiovisually and in 360 degrees, and in the context of augmented reality (AR), our perceptible reality is extended by computer graphics. As a result, these applications enable different modes of human-machine interaction that are increasingly accompanied by utopian promises of “virtual worlds”. In these promises, critical perspectives on the concrete practices interwoven with these technologies and their ableist, racist, classist, and sexist implications usually go unnoticed.
In the short project “Reimaging the Real – Critical Practices in Extended Reality” we want to develop critical approaches that address the practices interwoven with XR technologies. We are not only interested in expressing critique on a purely theoretical level, but also in developing critical-practical VR and AR projects ourselves. These projects can include both 1) critique of XR technologies, 2) critique through XR technologies, and 3) critique of technical practice with XR.
