The gloomy forecasts on the consequences of exceeding planetary boundaries and emission-related interference with the atmosphere were already theorised and transferred into empirical evidence half a century ago. Nevertheless, all opportunities were missed to take cost-effective and timely measures to prevent reaching climatic tipping points and thus triggering a catastrophe unprecedented in world history.
While courts condemn the government for violating the intertemporal liberty rights of future generations through inaction, we have barely 10 years left to meet the contractually binding targets of 1.5°C maximum global warming. Thus, an increasingly radical protest movement is forming, whose members no longer want to ignore the conflict over their ethical standards and are prepared to break laws in order to achieve the goal. In doing so, they are naturally confronted with the accusation of disregarding the state of law.
We address this dilemma with methods of Speculative Design: After analysing the initial situation and critically evaluating potential protest and intervention measures, we design forms of protest that are sufficiently efficient and aesthetic to create the disruptive moment that forces politics and society to comply with the targets. Since we are moving in speculative space, we discuss open-endedly, deliberately cross borders and level legality and legitimacy – always with respect to human dignity and (physical) integrity.
