Even before we are born, the world can get its first picture of us via ultrasound, no one wants to imagine what the pandemic would have done to us without Skype and Zoom, and once we are gone, surviving relatives may spend some time maintaining the image we have built up in the form of our social media profiles. Even before the digital circus made its way into our global villages, we dreamed up this and that to make distant people seem present, from scarecrows to equestrian statues, from theatrical performances to ghost conjurings.
After a tour of historical attempts to make the absent appear present, we will focus on the problems, which we will face today and tomorrow in being physically only with us, mentally most comfortably far, far away.
Chances and challenges, which go along with the current possibilities of medial presence suggestion, will directly occupy us in the course, because it takes place simultaneously at two universities, constantly connected by live video.
The goal of the course is that small teams, consisting of students from both locations, deal with partial aspects of the above-mentioned topic, derive social, economic or artistic questions from it and search for answers to these by means of creative interventions and experiments.
This seminar is a master seminar in Trier, therefore it prioritizes Master students in Cologne aswell, but is open to anyone at KISD.
