“Terrains vagues” – these are the abandoned, undefined, empty, often forgotten spaces of the city that are in a temporary state of not-more and not-yet. While they are traditionally considered eyesores in the cityscape, signs of social ills and counter-sites to urban order, we recognize in them spaces of possibility for a new urbanity in fragmented cities.
We explore these informal spaces through photography, mapping, notation, audio walks, and installations in order to revive their untapped potential and formulate new urban and cultural expectations for them. We analyze their material relics, which appear as evidence of past uses, and reconstruct the different layers of time deposited in them. We treat with care what exists materially, urbanistically and socially. With the help of an archive, the found materials are inventoried, spatial and social contexts are uncovered, and important actors and their relationships are recorded. Materials and networks are made available for further work and give impulses for own spatial ideas.
In this way, we initiate a process of knowledge appropriation in which elements of local history, topography, and ecology are combined with insider social knowledge about spaces and neighborhoods, as well as political discussions and civil society debates. Based on this urban knowledge, we feel competent and responsible for the sustainable development of new cultural spaces and the solidary use of common resources.
