The Flood – Mapping Environmental Crises

Our project is dedicated to the audiovisual processing of data, information, and memories related to the 2021 flood disaster in the Ahr Valley. Our goal is to thoroughly document the flood event using open-source research and digital reconstructions. Through cartographic, diagrammatic, and sculptural methods, we will examine the spatial and temporal processes, as well as the social, cultural, political, legal, and structural conditions that contributed to the disaster. In doing so, we question the role of romanticized images of the cultural landscape, explore reconstruction plans, and investigate potential new alliances between humans, nature, and culture. We will use the collected and visualized data to create a cultural memory bank for flood and landscape knowledge, which we will communicate in an inclusive, accessible, and participatory manner.

This project is a collaboration between the Cologne Institute of Conservation Sciences (Prof. Dr. Tilly Laaser); the Faculty of Architecture’s MA program “Spatial Strategies”; and the Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler municipal administration (Heike Wernz-Kaiser, municipal collection / urban and cultural history).

In unserem Projekt widmen wir uns der audiovisuellen Aufbereitung von Daten, Informationen und Erinnerungen im Zusammenhang mit der Flutkatastrophe im Ahrtal im Jahr 2021. Ziel ist es, das Flutgeschehen durch Open-Source-Recherchen und digitale Rekonstruktionen umfassend zu dokumentieren. Mittels kartografischer, diagrammatischer und skulpturaler Verfahren untersuchen wir die raumzeitlichen Abläufe, die sozialen und kulturellen Auswirkungen sowie die politischen, rechtlichen und baulichen Gegebenheiten, die zur Katastrophe beigetragen haben. Dabei hinterfragen wir die Rolle romantisierender Kulturlandschaftsbilder, erkunden Pläne für den Wiederaufbau und erforschen potenzielle neue Allianzen zwischen Mensch, Natur und Kultur. Aus den gesammelten und visualisierten Daten entsteht ein kultureller Gedächtnisspeicher für Flut- und Landschaftswissen, der inklusiv, zugänglich und partizipativ vermittelt wird.

Das Projekt erfolgt im Austausch mit dem Institut für Restaurierungs- und Konservierungswissenschaft (Prof. Dr. Tilly Laaser), der Fak. für Architektur, MA „Spatial Strategies” sowie der Stadtverwaltung Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler (Heike Wernz-Kaiser, städtische Sammlung / Stadt- und Kulturgeschichte).
