On the example of Dar es Salaam in Tansania, we investigate in spatial and cultural changes of cities in countries that have seen or are experiencing a change from socialist to market-oriented paradigms. We follow the thesis that these processes are particularly interesting where its signs are beyond the obvious. We think of cities as multifaceted, relational and dynamical places with an intrinsic logic, that are constantly transforming themselves in the process of everyday life. To come closer to their secret, one must step into their thicket. We might hereby for example reconstruct the genesis and decay of social, cultural and mental spaces, depict fragmented perceptions, lifestyles and value orientations of inhabitants, or illuminate informal characteristics and atmospheric ambiances in micro environments. Since we need to get familiar with Tansanias culture and history, as well as with appropriate design specific research methods and the ongoing discussions around the ideas of socialism and postcolonialism, the excursion to Tansania will take place not before June. 10 Students will be funded with 400,- € each.
