In 2020, Anna Luz Pueyo discovered food forests on a research trip to Taïwan as part of the KISD project FuturexCitiesxFood. There, she observed how cityscapes transformed into lush, generous forests manage to activate a social community and bring life to urban spaces.
This ancient model of food production simulates the natural ecosystem of a forest, creating a multi-layered, resilient, self-sustained and incredibly productive edible space for city dwellers.
When she found out that this system could be adapted to any climate, herself and Clara Schmeinck embarked on a four-year journey to design a pilot project in negotiation with the city of Cologne.
With the aim to link the design school with local plants and its neighbours, an enthusiastic team
of KISDies joined this ambitious project a year ago under the wing of Prof. Heidkamp, in order to grow a Vielwald next to KISD, on part of a dog meadow (TH Köln / Maternusstraße).
The long-term goal is to grow a diversity of plants for food, materials and colors there that could be transformed in the school labs, sharing knowledge and harvests with a deep engagement and ownership by the diverse stakeholders in the local community.
At the moment, the city is deciding whether we will get long-term ownership of this area as a research project and on-site lab.
So this year, we are the closest we have ever been to making this happen, and it starts with placemaking.
During the first week of April, Anna Luz Pueyo will join KISD to start concrete actions on the spot, reinforcing the past work of the Food Systems AG by teaching participatory tools and forest design methods.
The first two days of the workshop will be dedicated to connecting with the local community through a communication campaign in the neighbourhood and the occupation of the space itself. The students will set camp on the current “Hundewiese” and organize a variety of placemaking exercises to figure out the motivation level of the neighbouring community, their mental obstacles and identify key local figures to support the project. This time will also be the moment to connect to locals, find out what they want to grow and how to engage there.
The third day in the morning will be dedicated to reinforcing the local plant inventory of the neighbourhood and creating a local herbarium, in preparation for the design phase.
The Wednesday afternoon and the last two days will be dedicated to designing the Vielwald at KISD based on our field insights. Using analog cartography, we will map the different species and infrastructures, looking closely at optimizing our budget, keeping close to the neighbours’ desires and forest gardening principles. Experts will be invited to join us digitally during this phase, such as a local landscaper and food forest expert Claire Mauquié, initiator of the Taiwanese food forests (yet to be confirmed). We will also dedicate some time to plan the next steps for the AG and target funding opportunities.
The Friday presentation will happen on the Hundewiese, closing up this week with a friendly gathering open to all neighbours.

This short-term project will take place from 01.04 – 05.04, with full presence during the five days required. Due to the long-term scope of this activity, students of the AG Food Systems (including newcomers) will be preferred for the participation in the project.
