FYI – informative blog that I signed up for before coming to Germany. May be an interesting thing to suggest to new students/exchange students 🙂

Things to know when renting an apartment in Germany

Do you know the meaning of “Attest” or “Beipackzettel”? You might hear them when you go to see a doctor or want to buy medication at a pharmacy. Find out more about these and some other most important words you will ever need when looking for medical care in the illustrated dictionary “First Aid” by the Deutsches Studentenwerk.

The German Academic Exchange Service published Information on the Legal Requirements Applicable to the Pursuit of Gainful Employment by Foreign Students, University Graduates Scientists and Other Academics.

The options open to foreign students, university graduates, visiting scientists and other
academics from non-EU states for taking up gainful employment are governed, above all, by
the Residence Act and the Employment Regulation. For EU nationals, the Freedom of
Movement Act/EU is of relevance. However, other laws and regulations may also apply to
the subject matter described in the following.

This page belongs to the studentenwerk, which is a central institution governing student services in Cologne. They manage all the student residences in Cologne and you can apply online.

An alternative to the student residences is private flatshares, in German called WG’s (Wohngemeinshaft). There are several webpages to find private flatshares, some of them are:

http://www.wg-gesucht.de (good one)

http://www.studenten-wg.de

http://www.wohngemeinschaft.de

You can also find accommodation in Cologne through Facebook. KISD has an international group, where students post available flats and you can also ask for help in your search for accommodation:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/219998581379672/

Another useful Facobook group is called NETT-WERK KÖLN. It is a group of people that lives in Cologne, and through this group you can sell and buy everything – including flats and cheap furniture for you new home:

Another way to find a private flat or flatshare is through the school. Write to the international office, they are always ready to help and the will also forward offers from outgoing students. Write and email to exchange_tutor@kisd.de
