The Zollverein Coal Mine is a large former industrial site in the city of Essen. It has been inscribed into the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites and is one of the anchor points of the European Route of Industrial Heritage. Nowadays it is a Art & Design museum with big exhibitions and beautiful architecture e.g. the the Zollverein Kubus. The Red Dot Design Museum is also there.

The Dortmunder U is a former beer brewery and shows artworks from 20th and 21st centuries, develops innovative concepts of cultural education in the digital age, initiates partnerships between art and science, and cooperates with different players in the context of creative industries.
I was there a few times e.g. at the ‘moving types’ exhibition. It was really interesting. And at the top there is a observation deck where you can go for free and see the howl city!

As it might be a little hard for you guys to find the places to go out, to experience Cologne Nightlife (which, indeed, has a lot to offer!), here are two links to webpages in english, which can give you a short overview of what possibilities there are to go out.

This one is a little more mainstream, concerning lots of clubs and locations in which also the music is more mainstream:

http://www.cologne.de/what-to-do/nightlife.html

This one also offers information about pubs, bars and a little more alternative clubs:

http://www.inyourpocket.com/germany/cologne/nightlife/clubs

And, in case your German is sufficient enough, this is always a good address to find something on short-notice or even on the long-run:

Hope you will have fun and enjoy your stay here!

As a little information for you, incoming students: I guess you already heard a lot of the beautiful christmas markets that you can find in every bigger german city.

Especially Cologne has over seven different christmas markets. There are more “classical” christmas markets like the market on the Kölner Domplatte, or the “Markt der Engel” at Neumarkt –  and also more special-themed ones like the fairy-tale christmas market at Rudolfplatz or the medieval market at the Schokoladenmuseum. You really can see a lot of different things there and enjoy a nice Glühwein (hot wine with spices) or try out typical food like “Reibekuchen”.

If you want to seek out more information about the several markets, please have a look under the links below:

Have a nice christmas time!

Here is a folder, with information from the international office of FH Köln – it tells you all you need to know when you are going to Cologne:

First info folder

Just recently an easy way to travel occured in Germany and luckily Deutsche Bahn is confronted with some serious competition. Well equiped coaches for long distance travels appeal with a cheap price and reasonable comfort (free internet, 230V electricity on board, low prices for drinks…). To give an example: Cologne – Mannheim for 11 Euro takes you 3 hours with “meinfernbus” and the bus was brand new & people were kind.

Common providers are:
