GDI Cologne - Global Design Initiative 2025 (on-site workshop and conference in Cologne)

Our world needs designers collaborating across disciplines to integrate knowledge and develop holistic solutions in an increasingly complex, decolonising environment. The future of design education is characterised by a strong focus on research, critically reflecting regenerative futures,the use of digital tools and technologies, interdisciplinary collaboration, and social responsibility in the context of globalisation and climate crisis. Design institutions need to both contribute in defining those developments, but also adapting to emerging needs and trends in order to create the best possible atmosphere and setting for students allowing them to develop competencies and knowledge they need to succeed in the rapidly evolving world. The Global Design Initiative (GDI) project, collaboratively led by five institutions since 2015, focuses on providing an open and experimental setting to discover new learning, thinking and designing parameters. The Global Design Initiative is a rolling project founded by the Global Design Faculty, which is driven by five international, globally oriented Art and Design Universities / Institutes based in London, Cologne, Singapore, Taipei, and Tokyo. It brings together like-minded people, mainly global design education leaders, who believe in new approaches to dialogue and exchange.

Together with 15 students from 5 different global universities, a team of 3 KISD students will be able to work in a unique atmopsphere around the topic of “Alternative Communities”. You will work in an experimental setting, together with your global peers, the global faculty members and the local partners you will engage with. In the one-week workshop in Cologne we will explore potentials to design for and with Alternative Communities, with designers as advocators driving design with the communities. We will work with actors and acivitsts from different domains of the Cologne Food System actively engaging in new modes of producing, processing and consuming food.

Das Projekt Global Design Initiative (GDI), das seit 2015 von fünf Institutionen gemeinsam geleitet wird, konzentriert sich darauf, ein offenes und experimentelles Umfeld zu schaffen, um neue Lern-, Denk- und Gestaltungsparameter zu entdecken. Die Global Design Initiative ist ein fortlaufendes Projekt, das von der Global Design Faculty ins Leben gerufen wurde und von fünf internationalen, global ausgerichteten Kunst- und Design-Universitäten/Instituten in London, Köln, Singapur, Taipeh und Tokio getragen wird. Es bringt Gleichgesinnte zusammen, vor allem Führungskräfte der globalen Designausbildung, die an neue Ansätze für Dialog und Austausch glauben.
